Stanford - Serenade in F for strings and winds, Op. 95
I. AllegroCapricorn Ensemble
The Serenade, premiered in January 1906, is a nonet comparable to a similar work composed by Hubert Parry (with which it is paired on this recording by the Capricorn Ensemble). It is a thirty-minute sonata-style piece; the opening movement showcases Charles Stanford as the “British Brahms,” marrying continental architecture to materials which could only have been harvested from the Isles.
